Pennsylvania Weather Review: September 2025
Pennsylvania Weather Review: September 2025
The dry pattern from August continued into September but some significant rain finally came to portions of the state late in the month. Take a look back at weather events in Pennsylvania for the month of September 2025.
September was another relatively quiet month. There were just 10 severe weather reports in the state during August and September was not far behind with just 5. However, one of these reports was an EF0 tornado in Quarryville, Lancaster County, on September 4th. This was the 22nd tornado in the state this year and was the first tornado July 1st. The same event brought over 2.50" of rain to the Reading area on the 4th.
Temperatures dropped well into the 30s on September 8th and 9th. Being one of the driest locations in the state since late July, Altoona dropped to 35° on September 8th breaking the daily record of 39°. This also is the earliest temperature <=35° on record, 6 days earlier than previously recorded and was the second earliest frost (<=36°).

Northern Pennsylvania was treated to a glorious display of Northern Lights on the evening of September 14th. Yes, the sky was clear in Pennsylvania for another astronomical event!
The first drought report of the month introduced Moderate Drought to 8% of the state. By the middle of the month, 25% of the state was in Moderate Drought. The report on September 23rd placed half of Pennsylvania in Moderate, Severe, or Extreme Drought. This is the first time ever that there has been Extreme Drought in Beaver County.

Scattered and isolated showers brought rain to different portions of southern Pennsylvania on 4 days in a 5 day period from September 16th to 20th. Much more substantial and widespread precipitation came on the 22nd to 25th. The heaviest amounts of over 3 inches fell from southwest PA to northeast PA. The only Flash Flood Warning of the month came on the 23rd in Lancaster County.
The month ended quiet and dry again. There were many days late in the month with high clouds overhead, providing many vivid sunrises and sunsets. Some of the high clouds overhead were courtesy of tropical influences, however the much needed tropical moisture stayed far away from the Commonwealth.
September Statistics
Temperature anomalies for the month ranged from near average across northwest Pennsylvania and into parts of central Pennsylvania to 3 degrees above average in the southeast. Unsurprisingly, September was very dry for most locations with Pittsburgh and Scranton close to average.

Looking Ahead
I'm going to be enjoying the nice weather before winter arrives so the blog will be quiet until November unless something crazy happens. Hopefully you too will be able to enjoy the fall weather.
Thanks for reading, and remember to always look up!
