Pennsylvania Weather Review: Summer 2026
At the end of my August 2026 Pennsylvania Review I did not include the Summer 2026 statistics like I usually add at the end of each season. This is because I want to take a more in depth look at some of the highlights of June, July, and August 2026.
Summer Statistics

Temperatures during Summer 2026 were near to slightly above average across Pennsylvania. Philadelphia recorded the largest temperature anomaly at nearly 2 degrees warmer than average, the 3rd warmest summer on record there. Many locations recorded surpluses of precipitation of over 2.50". Philadelphia was once again an outlier with a surplus of nearly 5 inches of rain making this the wettest summer since 2013. However nearby locations continued to see drought conditions linger as Harrisburg & Allentown remained dry.

With an average temperature of 69.8° statewide, Summer 2026 was 1.5° warmer than average. This ranks as the 29th warmest summer on record. For many counties in southeastern Pennsylvania it ranked as a top 1/3rd warmest summer on record. It was the 39th wettest summer on record with an average total precipitation of 12.22". It was the second wettest summer on record for Cambria County.
Severe Weather
The National Weather Service was exceptionally busy issuing warnings for severe weather and flash flooding during the summer months.
114 Flash Flood Warnings were issued in both July and August. This is a monthly record for each month and the 2nd most Flash Flood Warnings ever issued for any month in the state! Year to date, a record most number of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings have been issued. 257 Severe Thunderstorm Warnings in July is the 3rd most for any month. Tornado Warnings were also abundant with July seeing the most ever.

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued for the entire state during the summer months except for a tiny sliver of Tioga County. Chester County was a hotspot for Severe Thunderstorm Warnings although Butler County had the most with 37. The Philadelphia area was the hotspot for Flash Flood Warnings. Flash Flood Warnings were issued on nearly half of the days in the month of August somewhere in Pennsylvania.

Tornadoes
Entering June there had been no tornadoes in the state so far in 2026. The average first tornado touches down on April 24th. The first tornadoes of the year came on June 6th, the latest first tornado since 2008. Although the season got off to a late start, the tornadoes would impact the state at an impressive rate all summer long.

The total number of tornadoes for June through August is an impressive 45! This is the 2nd most number of tornadoes for a single year for the state! Below are some more statistics of this remarkable summer.
22 in June = 2nd most for June & any month
15 in July = 2nd most for July
37 in June + July = Record most for June + July
8 in August = 2nd most for August

Wrapping Up & Looking Ahead
The busy severe weather certainly didn't stop at the end of meteorological summer. The first 3 days of September were actually some of the most busy days this year with multiple rounds of impactful storms. I could have included those stats here, too, but I will save those for the September review out in early October.
